Salinas stabbing suspect arrested after East Market Street attack — Victim in critical condition

Last night, Salinas Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a stabbing in a parking lot on the 600 block of East Market Street. Witnesses said the suspect fled eastbound and was later seen in the 700 block of East Market Street.

Officers arriving on scene located a 44-year-old man with multiple stab wounds. First responders rendered aid while additional units established a perimeter to locate the suspect.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Juan Martinez, was located in the 700 block of Jefferson Street. Martinez attempted to flee but was taken into custody without further incident.

The victim was transported to Natividad Medical Center and remains in critical condition. Martinez was booked at Monterey County Jail on an attempted murder charge. The Salinas Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. Anyone with information or video related to the incident is asked to contact the Salinas Police Department.
