Community Police Academy

The Salinas Police Department’s Community Police Academy is set to relaunch in 2025, following a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. This revitalized program reflects our ongoing dedication to fostering stronger connections between the police department and the community we serve.

The academy is designed to provide participants with a broad understanding of law enforcement and our department’s operations. Topics may include areas such as: organizational structure, K-9 operations, field procedures, specialized units, laws of arrest, investigations, and crime scene evidence processing.

Participants will have opportunities to engage with hands-on activities, which may include ride-alongs, demonstrations of crime scene investigations, interactive scenarios, and insights into specialized units like SWAT and K-9. These experiences aim to offer a behind-the-scenes look into policing and build a deeper appreciation for the complexities of law enforcement.

Stay tuned for more details as we prepare to resume this valuable community program!

Salinas Police Department

A Legacy Since 1872

The Salinas Police Department proudly traces its origins to October 14, 1872, marking the appointment of the first law enforcement officer in the town that would later become the City of Salinas. For over 150 years, we have been dedicated to serving this thriving community with professionalism, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to public safety.

Salinas is a place of growth—in our community, our families, and the agricultural fields that feed the nation, as well as the dreams that flourish in one of America’s youngest cities. Home to over 163,000 residents, with a median age of 31 years, Salinas celebrates its diversity, and we are proud that 41% of our officers are bilingual, reflecting the vibrant culture of the community we serve.

Nestled near the mouth of the Salinas River as it flows to the Monterey Bay, our city is located in one of the most fertile and agriculturally productive regions on Earth. This success is made possible by the hardworking and talented people who call Salinas home, including the men and women of the Salinas Police Department who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents.

Our city has a rich and diverse history, having been home to the Esselen and Ohlone Indians, Spanish missionaries and ranchers, American pioneers, and immigrants from Latin America, Japan, the Philippines, Switzerland, and across the globe. It is also the birthplace of literary icon John Steinbeck, whose works, such as East of Eden and Of Mice and Men, were inspired by the Salinas Valley.

The Salinas Police Department is honored to protect this vibrant, historic, and dynamic city. Through community partnerships, innovative policing strategies, and a commitment to excellence, we work every day to ensure Salinas remains a safe, welcoming place for everyone to live, work, and grow.
