SPD Welcomes New Wellness Dog

Salinas, CA — The Salinas Police Department introduced its newest team member this week: Sage, a 1-year-old yellow Labrador who will serve as the department’s official wellness dog.

Sage arrives professionally trained in supervising belly-rub operations, conducting surprise cuddle inspections, and reminding officers and staff that snack breaks are essential. Assigned to the department’s wellness program, she has already been making rounds through the station, offering comfort after difficult calls and helping personnel pause and breathe during busy shifts.
In her first few weeks on the job, Sage has quickly become a morale booster, brightening workspaces and providing a calming presence for officers and civilian staff alike.

Department leaders say the wellness dog program is part of a broader effort to support mental health and resilience among first responders.

Help us welcome Sage to the SPD family, and stay tuned for more updates and photos as she settles into her new role.
