Commander Promotion Announcement
Salinas, California — The Salinas Police Department proudly announces the promotion of Gerardo “Gerry” Magaña to the rank of Commander. Sworn in by Chief Acosta, Commander Magaña assumes a senior leadership role following a distinguished 22‑year career dedicated to public safety and community service.
Career and Service
Commander Magaña’s commitment to law enforcement began early through the D.A.R.E. program and the California Highway Patrol Explorer Program at Salinas High School. He earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Hartnell College and graduated from the police academy in 2003 before joining the Salinas Police Department.
Over the course of his career, Commander Magaña has served in patrol, as a Field Training Officer, in investigations, the Violence Suppression Unit, and special operations. In 2016 he fulfilled a lifelong goal by serving as a K9 handler with K9 Erri. His specialized assignments and instructional roles have included the Mounted Unit, hostage negotiation, driving instructor, and officer safety instructor.
Promoted to Sergeant in 2019, he continued to advance through the ranks and completed professional development programs including a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Management, the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, and Leadership Monterey County.
Recognition and Leadership
Commander Magaña has been honored with multiple awards, including a Life‑Saving Award, several Awards of Merit, the 2012 Salinas Jaycees Humanitarian of the Year Award, and the 2025 Legacy of Leadership Public Servant of the Year Award. His leadership is marked by a focus on accountability, mentorship, and strengthening community engagement and trust.
