On Thursday, June 15th at approximately 1:20 am, Salinas Police Officers responded to the 700 block of Garner Ave. on a ShotSpotter alert of gunshots in the area. While responding to the ShotSpotter, they were advised of a victim of a shooting in the area. On arrival, they located Luis Florez Gonzalez (36) suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers attempted life saving measures. However, the victim died due to his injuries.

Through the course of the investigation, Salinas Police Detectives have been able to identify Miguel Angel Alvarenga (30) as the suspect. On Thursday, June 29, 2023, Salinas Police Detectives and Officers of the Violence Suppression Task Force located Alvarenga in the area John St. and Work St. He was arrested during a traffic stop without incident.

While Alvarenga is now in custody and it is believed there are no additional suspects outstanding, this is still an active investigation.
